Tin is available in alluvial deposits throughout this region. The surrounding granite outcrops contain cassiterite, a tin oxide, and when the granite erodes, the cassiterite is carried into a stream or river valley. Since the cassiterite is very heavy, it typically sinks to the riverbed, and over time, rich mineral layers called placers develop. Clay, sand, and gravel then cover up these mineral rich layers, and when stream beds dry up, with a bit of work, the tin becomes easily accessible.</p><p>Southwest Britain has one of the most tin-rich landscapes in the world. Almost every valley that descends from the tin-laced granite outcrops has or had buried tin placers for miners to exploit. Exactly when the miners exploited these tin outcrops is where my argument begins to diverge from mainstream academia. Archaeologists believe that all the methods of the miners are known to them, and the chronology is well understood, with bronze age miners leaving the least signs for us to identify today. I will be presenting evidence at Bronze Age sites that shows their methods of mining were significantly more advanced than has ever been recognized. The culture responsible for mining the tin that &#8216;bronzizied&#8217; Europe and the Mediterranean modified the natural landscape in ingenious ways that allowed for them to streamline the tin extraction and washing process. Previously, the features of this modified landscape have been identified as naturally occurring by geologists or attributed to later activity by non-Bronze Age cultures by archaeologists. Let&#8217;s review their arguments and justifications before I present my argument.</p>

The <a href="https://archaeologymag.com/encyclopedia/bronze-age/">Bronze Age</a> refers to an era of technological revolution where societies around the Mediterranean and elsewhere began to forge weapons and tools from bronze, an alloy made up of 80% copper and 20% tin during the Middle Bronze Age. Believed to have begun around 3,000 BCE, the &#8220;bronzization&#8221; of the Mediterranean really kicked off around 2,000 BCE, and the era lasted until around 900 BCE, when iron was developed. Thus, some of the most famous civilizations in history, including Egypt, Babylon, Mycenae, and Phoenicia flourished during the Bronze Age. Essentially, bronze was so coveted because it was stronger than the unalloyed copper. To raise a military worthy of Ramesses II, you needed bronze, and a lot of it.</p>

Although ancient writers and Victorian antiquarians both posited a link to the rich deposits in southwestern Britain (modern day Devon and Cornwall), this view had well fallen out of popularity by the mid-twentieth century. The report sent shockwaves through the Bronze Age academic community, rattling the mainstream critics of a Mediterranean and Levantine connection to Britain as the paper demonstrated that isotopes of British tin matched those of bronze artefacts from across the ancient old world.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" emphasised by the authors of the paper), and a re-writing of this history is currently underway. But academia is sluggish and doesn&#8217;t readily accept new ideas that are contrary to its established norms. Sometimes, it takes an outsider to see the forest for the trees. Here is where I come in. Long before this paper was published, I was investigating British tin in the Bronze Age, and the physical evidence I stumbled across in plain sight will certainly help rewrite British culture and economy in the Bronze Age.
